11 Classrooms Join Project FeederWatch
This January through March, eleven classrooms will be watching the Burroughs bird feeders and sending their observations into the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. We've already tallied seven species, the highlight being a bald eagle that flew right over the school while some of Mrs. Wold's kindergartners were on duty.
Researchers will use these young citizen scientists' data to learn more about bird populations and the health of the environment. You can learn more at www.feederwatch.org.
Registration Open for 4th- and 5th-Grade Winter Bird Club
We start this week, and there's still time for fourth and fifth graders to register for our bird club's winter session. We'll be playing games, doing experiments with feathers and eggs, building nests, creating our own bird species, and more. Come and join the fun! Contact Amy Simso Dean with questions. The Burroughs fourth- and fifth-grade students embarked on an unforgettable outing to Three Rivers Park District/Hyland Ski Area in Bloomington on Friday, January 6 for the annual Physical Education Downhill Ski Trip.
We were excited to have so many parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends join us in this experience. During their ski lessons, the kids learned the basic fundamental skills of downhill skiing and skiing etiquette before challenging themselves with most of the hills Hyland has to offer. The skiers used tow ropes and chair lifts and descended with the skills they had learned.
Best of all, they have a bundle of stories that will last for years to come. Congratulations to all participants for a fun and educational day!
Our Music Specialist, Richard Carrick, is looking for some volunteers to accompany the student choirs during spring concerts. Piano players should be available the Thursday prior to the concert for a rehearsal. All of the concerts are located in the Burroughs auditorium. Click the headline for more information.
We are still collecting Box Tops for Education as part of monthly contests among the classrooms and will continue through the school year. The current contest runs through January 26, and for every ten Box Tops turned in, the classroom gets another part added to the class snowman on the atrium bulletin board. Hopefully we'll all see lots of smiling faces, top hats, and colorful scarves added in the coming weeks! Click the headline for more details.
