The Burroughs 4th and 5th grade physical education classes are planning a field trip to Three Rivers Park District/Hyland Ski Area in Bloomington. We will be going downhill snow skiing on Friday, January 10, 2014. This downhill ski trip will be for an entire school day; 9:10AM-3:40PM.
The students will receive a small group lessons, ski equipment, a lift ticket, and transportation for $20.00. Parents may travel and ski with their child for $20.00; lift ticket and rental equipment included. One adult discounted lift ticket and rental per family please and those tickets must be pre-payed before Friday. Chaperones will not be given lift tickets and rental forms until all students have been fitted with skies, boots and poles and have left the building. No lift tickets will be given out after noon. If parents do not want to ski, they may take the bus and enjoy this adventure with their child; no fee applied. Adults may donate additional monies (Scholarship) for students that may not be able to afford the experience. Skiers may elect to receive a school sack lunch, bring their own sack lunch from home or buy food at the snack bar; no purchasing food after 2:00PM. No fee will be assessed for students that have their own season pass for Three Rivers Park District/Hyland Ski Area and students may bring their own skies, boots, poles and snowboards on the bus. Students must go to school and ride the bus to the ski hill, its part of the overall experience. Parents are welcome as c!haperones, We are looking for at least 15 parent helpers; please contact classroom teachers in writing if you are interested in helping. !
Students may stay later and ski or snowboard if their parents are present or have made arrangements to stay late with another parent (a note from both parents must be provided to the child's classroom teachers at least one day ahead of time; NO LAST MINUTE ARRANGEMENTS OR PHONE CALLS - PLEASE PLAN AHEAD). The busses will leave to go back to Burroughs by 2:30PM. ! !
Lift tickets are good until 10:00PM; students may want to come back to Three Rivers Park District/Hyland Ski Area in Bloomington and ski or snowboard after dinner for no additional fee. Rental equipment may be checked out again for no additional fee if rental agreement receipt is presented; remind your child to keep that receipt in a secured place. If your child is a snowboarder, they may bring their own snowboard however; they w!ill not be allowed to use their snowboard until after the busses load to return to Burroughs. Please remember, this is a downhill snow skiing outing.!
Skiing is a great sport to learn in Minnesota snow country and can be enjoyed for a lifetime. We hope this will be a memorable experience for your child. We would like to stress that this not a required field trip. If you feel that you do not want your child to participate, this is perfectly understandable. M!ost of our students have never skied before and most all come away with a positive experience with stories to tell for years.
THE DEADLINE FOR RETURNING THE PAYMENT OF $20.00 OR MORE (IF PARENTS ARE COMING, OR IF YOU WANT TO DONATE ADDITIONAL MONIES FOR SCHOLARSHIPS) AND THE PERMISSION SLIPS IS WEDNESDAY JANUARY 8th! !
! ** MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO BURROUGHS COMMUNITY SCHOOL**!
WHAT TO WEAR SKIING!
Each child should remember that staying warm is the most important part of enjoying the out-of-doors. Long underwear is a necessity. Looks are not important.!
ON YOUR LEGS:
1. Snow-pants are best to keep warm and dry.
2. Snowmobile suits or warm-up pants are great.
3. P.J.’s work well as long underwear.
4. Jeans with layers underneath are good.
5. Wear one or two pairs of wool socks.
6. Your child must know their shoe size.
ON YOUR ARMS AND CHEST:
1. Winter jackets and sweat shirts.
2. Long underwear tops or double sweaters.
3. Students must know their body weight and height.
ON YOUR HANDS AND HEAD:
1. Winter mittens or gloves that are insulated work great, (choppers work well).
2. Some type of stocking cap that will cover your child’s ears is a must.
3. No long scarves are to be worn. They might get caught in the tow rope or chair lift. A Short scarf tucked into the jacket is all right.
4. Long hair should be braided or pony tailed and tucked into the hat.
It is better to have lots of layers on and then shed them as your child gets warm, rather than be too cold.
A Three Rivers Park District/Hyland Ski Area instructor will be coming to Burroughs on Thursday January 3rd, 2013 for a presentation to all 4th and 5th grade students. Many of their questions will be answered and the presentation will give them a good idea as to how the day will take shape.
