Deep Portage Field Trip
Wednesday, February 04, 2015 7:30 AM

The fourth grade classes will attend Deep Portage Environmental Learning Center (DPELC)  February 4-6, 2015.  This 3 day, 2 night trip takes place near Hackensack, MN.

Our students will board the buses EARLY the morning of February 4th, at 7:30 A.M., and begin the four hour journey to Hackensack. During the bus ride our students will have a number of items to complete in their "journals" that they will have made prior to our trip.

The bus may make a stop so that students and chaperones may take a short bathroom break about half-way, near Brainerd, MN.  This is a good opportunity to stretch the legs and get a bit of fresh air before pushing on to our final destination, Deep Portage.

Once we arrive at Deep Portage, we will unload the luggage from the buses, before going to the dining room to eat.  Students are served a wide variety of delicious meals during their time at DPELC.  A huge goal during our three day stay is to learn to be less wasteful.  One way the staff encourages this, is by asking students to eat what they want, but also eat what they take.

When students return they, hopefully, have a better view on things they can do to be  less wasteful, as well as new skills in orienteering, snowshoeing, "survival skills," and  many more skills related to math and science.

This trip is always one of the highlights of students' fourth grade year.
