Third graders this fall are each doing a project at the end of our study of number systems. We study Roman numbers, Egyptian numbers, and Chinese numbers. We play with numbers from an imaginary planet called the Land of Treble where everything comes in groups of three. We learn what it means to call our system of Hindu-Arabic numbers a base 10 system. Students get a better understanding of place value and how zero gives value to other numbers.
