Hello!  My name is Janet Johnson, and I have been teaching for many years.  This is my 13th year teaching first grade at Burroughs, and my 18th in Minneapolis.  I have also taught in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in Forest Lake and in St. Paul.  I worked with all ages of elementary students as a Gifted Coordinator at Waite Park School for five years.  I also have been a classroom teacher for 3rd, 5th and 6th grade students.

My husband and I have lived in Northeast Minneapolis for 27 years.  We have two children, Nick,  26, and Rachel, 24, who are both graduates of Minneapolis South High School, and more recently, college graduates.  Everyone in our family is teaching this year!  My husband is a Special Education teacher in the Osseo School District.  Nick, who graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Music, is currently working at Sheridan School as a Special Education Assistant, and has a house with some friends near the U of M.   Rachel, who just graduated from Gustavus College, was a GWS (Gender, Women & Sexuality) Studies major, and a dance minor.  She has been dancing since she was three years old, and is teaching at three dance studios this year, in addition to getting involved in the dance community in the metro area.  She lives with a friend in Northeast Minneapolis.  We are very proud of our children, and can't believe how fast the years have flown by.  It seems like such a short time ago that they were going off to first grade.

I believe that every child is unique, and needs a secure, caring, and stimulating environment in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially.  I hope to instill a love of learning in each and every child.  I believe we are partners in this process, and will work closely with you to achieve these goals.  We do a lot of hands-on learning, as it allows students to reinforce the lessons, while creating an opportunity for individual discovery and knowledge.
