Fifth Grade Science - FOSS
The 5th Grade uses the FOSS Science curriculum.  The four science units are outlined below.  Students will keep a science notebook throughout the year, as well as completing projects at the end of these units, and presenting them to the class.  Go to each teachers page to see current assignments.

Variables
The "Variables" module introduces students to the concept of a variable.  Students also identify controlled variables as they design and conduct controlled experiments using a variety of multivariate systems, including pendulums, airplanes, boats, and catapults.  (4 activities)

 Levers and PulleysIn "Levers and Pulleys" students learn basic concepts of mechanics using two of the six simple machines: Levers and pulleys.  They gain first-hand experience with effort, load, fulcrum, and mechanical advantage.  (4 activities)

Landforms
The "Landforms" module develops concepts in physical geography and mapping.  Students use stream tables to simulate the creation of landforms.  They then create and use topographic maps that describe landforms.   (5 activities)

Environments
The "Environments" module introduces students to a variety of different plants and animals and their environments.  Structured investigations in both terrestrial and aquatic systems develop the concepts of environmental factor, tolerance, environmental preference, and environmental range.  (6 activities)
