Marie Straka - .4 SERT (Special Ed. Resource Teacher)
I have been a special education teacher for more than 20 years and have spent most of those years in the Minneapolis Schools. I have taught different age groups from Kindergarten all the way through seniors in high school and even adults, but elementary school is my favorite. Next year, I will continue to teach at Seward in the mornings and am excited to be teaching at Burroughs in the afternoons.
When I am not at school, I am always busy with my 3 children. They are all athletes, so I spend much of my time as a spectator and supporter of baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and hockey teams. When we can find the time, we love to go camping and to travel. I love to cook and to read and consider myself to be a beginning gardener.
I am looking forward to getting to know the Burroughs community.
Jeff Pilon – Art Teacher
My name is Jeff Pilon (pronounced like pull-on), and this is my first year teaching art at Burroughs. The last three years, I taught at Anwatin Middle School. Prior to that, I taught elementary art in Eden Prairie and served in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona in studio art and my master's degree in art education from the University of Minnesota. My free time is spent chasing around my son which is fun and tiring. Recently, I have added woodworking to my list of hobbies which I try to squeeze in along with my interest in painting, printmaking and anything sports related.
Alyssa Kuhlman – 2nd Grade Teacher
I am excited to be back at Burroughs this year and joining the 2nd grade team! I have been teaching a 1st/2nd grade classroom at Armatage Montessori the past 3 years! This is my 5th year teaching in the Minneapolis district. My husband and I live in the Lake Harriett community with our daughter, Lilly, who just turned 1!
Julie Murray Ziegler – 2nd Grade Teacher
My name is Julie Murray Ziegler, and I am thrilled to be teaching 2nd grade at Burroughs this year. I come to Burroughs after teaching in the Minneapolis Public Schools since 1993... I think that makes this year my 20th! The majority of those 20 years have been spent teaching K-2 which is definitely my passion. I just finished the K-12 Reading Specialist Program at the University of Minnesota which was a fabulous experience! I am looking forward to bringing what I learned at the U to my classroom at Burroughs. When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family. My husband, Eric, is a School Social Worker at Pratt School in Minneapolis, my daughter, Kiera, is in high school at Minnehaha Academy, and my son, Calvin, is in college at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. I enjoy reading (of course!) and spending time in the great outdoors both in northern Minnesota and in northern Michigan. I am so looking forward to getting to know the Burroughs community!
Marilyn Gleason – ELL Teacher
Marilyn Gleason was I was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota near Como Lake and grew up walking around the lake in the evenings and riding my bike to the zoo almost every day during the summer. I traveled around the United States in a tent camper with my family while young. This experience led me to graduate from St. Cloud State University and become a Social Studies teacher and I love to teach American History.
I am also fluent in American Sign Language. My experience with the Deaf Community increased my desire to learn more about other cultures and languages. I returned to school and, in 2008, graduated from Hamline University with a Master’s Degree in English as a Second Language.
