Note from the Principal

Dear families,

So much has happened in the last few weeks in our Burroughs community as well as in our city, our country, and the world. Although we continue to move forward, we as well as our students carry these events with us. It is important to remember that each individual is impacted differently and it is through empathy that we seek to understand and support one another and our children in this journey.

Last week, I spoke to our Burroughs Community School Mission:

Our mission is a commitment to inspire all students to be College, Career and Life Ready, well-educated with a sense of determination, bravery and the capacity to fulfill their aspirations. Burroughs students will be Global Citizens who give back to society and continue to be life-long learners.

Thank you to all who have reached out to support and share ideas and resources that with us. I look forward to deepening our partnerships as we work to realize our school mission. To that end, here are a few of the things that we are doing to make this mission come alive at Burroughs.

  • Morning Meetings every day in all classrooms
  • Teachers are implementing 2nd Step, a social emotional learning curriculum
  • 5th grade leaders give announcements every Monday about "The Burroughs Way" - Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe
  • Our Positive School-Wide Engagement Team is working on creating and maintaining a positive climate in our school by supporting teachers with resources and ideas for building relationships and strong classroom communities in their classrooms.
  • Our Racial Equity Team is working to understand and address race and equity issues in our community so that we can ensure an inclusive environment for all students.
  • Some staff are participating in a book club which aligns to our work around racial equity. Currently we are reading A Good Time for the Truth by Sun Yung Shin.

With the Thanksgiving Holiday upon us, I want to share my gratitude for each and every student, family, teacher, and staff member in our community. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of this community. Thank you for sharing your children with us!
