School Safety - With the recent school shooting tragedies, your children may have questions or may be experiencing some anxiety regarding their safety at school. The safety of our children is of utmost importance to us and is the rationale for the safety drills that we engage students and staff in throughout the school year. An article by the National Association of School Psychologists was shared by one of our parents. It is a good resource for adults if children have questions about the recent tragedies.

Principal Bartl's Leave of Absence - Although you have seen Ms. Bartl around the school at various times in the past few weeks, her official first day back is Monday, March 5. She looks forward to getting back into the swing of school life!

Lunchroom Volunteers Needed - If you are looking for an opportunity to volunteer at Burroughs, we can always use an extra pair of hands and a smiling face in the cafeteria during lunches. If you are interested in this opportunity please sign up at this Google doc link.

Budget - In light of our district's financial situation, we are anticipating a challenging few weeks ahead as we await our school budget. We value family and staff input throughout this process. If you did not have the opportunity to complete this year's family budget survey in December, we will soon be providing another opportunity for families to do so. Our goal as we work through the budget process is to maintain high quality, student-centered programming that is in alignment with our district's priorities of Equity, Social Emotional Learning, and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). Please see the 'Instructional Insights' section below for more details regarding these priorities. As we communicate budget information throughout the next couple of months, please feel free to reach out to Ms. Bartl and/or Ms. Woods with any questions or concerns that arise.

Read-a-Thon - Thank you to the Read-a-Thon committee, who are working tirelessly to make "I Love to Read Month" an engaging and memorable time for our students.  Our theme this year is based on a book by Mary Hoffman, "Amazing Grace." The purpose of I Love to Read Month is to get kids excited about reading. To this end, classrooms will be doing activities throughout the month to expose students to a variety of books, authors, and to encourage a love of reading. There are also many opportunities for volunteers to come in to read to classes. Please refer to the packet that came home for full details regarding the Burroughs Read-a-Thon.

This year, like last year, students will earn Read-a-Thon T-shirts based on the number of minutes read. The rationale for this change last year was to be more equitable and give as many students as possible the opportunity to earn a T-shirt. A new change to the Read-a-Thon events this year, is the elimination of the ice cream and pizza parties. This change is a result of the district's newly adopted wellness policy. In place of pizza and ice cream parties students will have the opportunity to earn other fun experiences including a 'Johnny Pop Party' or the chance to attend a magic show.

A Good Time for the Truth - Thanks to our PTA, Positive School Wide Engagement Team and Racial Equity Team, we are excited to announce a panel and discussion of this book with the editor Sun Yung Shin and contributors Shannon Gibney and IBE. Please look for the flyer coming home for details. RSVPs to burroughsracialequity@gmail.com are appreciated but not required. The event will include childcare and light refreshments. We hope to see many of you on Thursday, March 8 from 6-8 pm.
