Week on Wheels Was a Success!
Tuesday, September 23, 2014 7:40 AM

PE teachers Mr. Hill and Mr. Peterson would like to thank families for another successful Week on Wheels ("WOW") event. More than 351 Burroughs students from thirteen classes took to the bike paths for a tour of Lake Harriet. About sixty students at a time ventured from the Burroughs gym, around the lake, and back within a 55-minute PE class (that's about 702 hundred laps around the lake, or about 2387 miles). There were more than 300 bicycles, 6 Tag-Alongs, and 8 trailers in the gym (it looked like a bike shop). Many students were willing to share their bikes with those students who did not have access to one.

The 3rd-, 4th- and 5th-grade riders showed respect for other riders, inline skakers, joggers, and walkers and used good bicycle safety skills as well as respectful bicycle etiquette. Many compliments were given to the students from other park users. More than 32 parent helpers and 4 classroom teachers contributed with supervision and support. Thank you teachers and parents! Ten students from the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, Physical Education program came to observe, volunteer, and participate in the WOW event with our Burroughs students.

The Beachcombers in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades jogged or rode a scooter to and from South Beach at Lake Harriet. There were more than 150 scooters in the gym.The students made sand castles and learned about respectful beach and trail etiquette, all during their 55-minute Physical Education class.  They learned about scooter safety while on the trails with other users. Other Burroughs students ran hard for a continuous run challenge. More than 432 students from sixteen classes (about 60 at a time) ran the parkway path (about 864 combined miles) and combed the beaches. More than 68 parents volunteered to run or scoot with the students as they embarked on their expedition.
