I hope that overall the first week of school was a positive
experience for you and your children. I know that it was not without
glitches yet each day things seemed to run a bit more
smoothly. Throughout the first week I had the opportunity to spend
time in many classroom Morning Meetings and Closing Circles. It was
wonderful to spend time in virtual classrooms and witness students and
teachers getting to know one another and beginning to build strong
classroom communities. Even virtually Burroughs felt like a joyful place
to learn, collaborate and grow!
The first week of school reaffirmed for me that we can do
this! Our students along with our adult community have risen to the
occasion and this is going to be a great year! We can build positive
relationships and establish essential rituals and routines while in
Distance Learning. The Morning Meeting, small group instruction
opportunities and Closing Circle are essential parts of our school
day. It is through these live opportunities that relationships will
gel, and we will learn how to best meet the social emotional and academic
needs of each of our students.
In the week ahead, the focus will continue to be on building a
positive classroom environment. As teachers work to get to know their
students, beginning of the year assessments in reading and mathematics
will begin to take place. Teachers will be communicating with
families about when and how these will take place. Beginning of the
year assessments are an important tool for teachers to know where their
students are academically so that they can plan for instruction that will
support them in moving forward.
