Burroughs Community School has received a gift of 300 books, along with 50 book bags, for Reading Corps K through 3 readers.  The gift is from Bookshelf Builders, a project of the Reading Corps tutoring program that has served Burroughs for the past ten plus years.

Bookshelf Builders’ purpose is to encourage our youngest students to collect and begin reading books with their families in the home setting. It was launched last year when Reading Corps was awarded a grant by the U.S. Department of Education.  The grant funded a book distribution in elementary schools across the nation where Reading Corps has tutoring programs giving away 200,000 books.

In 2017, Burroughs received approximately 100 books for students, and single copies of all 21 titles for the Media Center.  This year, all 50 students who have been or are currently enrolled in Reading Corp in K-3rd grades, have received four to six books and a sturdy book bag to take home.  In addition, the Media Center will receive a single copy of all 28 titles that are included in the collection to give access to the books to all K-3 students in our building.
