Get Involved at Burroughs
Tuesday, August 28, 2018 8:10 AM

Did you know that there are many engagement, enrichment, and fundraising opportunities at Burroughs Community School that need volunteers in order to succeed? We encourage all families to get involved in their child's education through volunteering. Additionally, it's a great way to meet new friends, set a positive example, and foster community within Burroughs.
There are a number of events coming up that need volunteers including:
  • Fall Book Fair
  • Campus Clean-Up Day
  • Fall for Burroughs Auction
  • Read-A-Thon
There are also many ongoing opportunities for volunteers to get involved on a regular basis including:
Art Adventure: This program, sponsored by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, introduces students to works of art from a variety of cultures. This year's theme is Sources of Strength.  Volunteering in the program includes visiting MIA to learn about the art from a trained professional and then discussing the pieces using reproductions and other props with our students in their art classes (no teaching experience necessary). The time commitment for grades 1-5 takes place during:
  • September/October--Training at MIA (day or evening). A sign-up sheet with days and times will be available next week.
  • November--Presenting two times to your child's art class
  • December--Take a MIA tour to see the art live (Optional for volunteers to attend, but recommended. It's fun to see the kids' excitement when they view and discuss the actual pieces!)
We're working with the kindergarten classes to expand our offering to them throughout the year. More info to come as we finalize the details. If you have questions, please email Burroughs Art Adventure.

BRAVO: Share your love of music, and get involved in your child's classroom by volunteering for BRAVO Music Appreciation, a curriculum enrichment program taught by parent (or family/community) volunteers. Six lessons presented throughout the year invite young minds to explore the creativity, inspiration, and imagination found in classical music. Volunteers attend two training sessions--one in fall and one in winter--and all teaching materials are provided. No music experience necessary. Learn more about BRAVO on the Burroughs website or email Alyssa Northrop with questions.

Destination Imagination: Destination Imagination is a team-based, STEAM focused activity. Student-led teams of four to seven students, along with an adult team manager, solve one of a set of open-ended challenges. All challenges involve writing a creative skit and engineering challenge-specific elements. Teams present their solutions at a spring competition. Previous Burroughs teams have gone on to participate in regional, state, and global competitions. Students learn research skills, persistence, collaborative problem-solving, and engineering design.
Each team needs one to two adults who can meet with the team at Burroughs for about an hour once a week. Adults manage the team but do not participate in solving the challenge; they provide resources and keep the team focused. Materials provided by Destination Imagination give a good framework for guiding students through the process.

Volunteers are needed to lead Destination Imagination teams. Please email Thea Reilkoff or Britt Waterman by September 21 if you are interested in more information or are available to manage a team.
