Important School Announcements
Tuesday, September 10, 2019 10:10 AM

School Start Time: A reminder that school starts at 9:10 am. Students who are dropped off, walk, or bike to school can arrive as early at 8:55 am. For the safety of our students, unless they are enrolled in the Minneapolis Kids program, please do not drop them off at school until 8:55 am. Burroughs staff is typically in meetings from 8:00-8:55 am, therefore we do not have the capacity to supervise children during that time. Students who arrive after 9:10 a.m. will have to sign in at the office and be considered tardy.
Breakfast: School breakfast is available and free of charge on a daily basis for any student who would like it.  At 8:55 am students are released from the atrium to go to breakfast and/or their classrooms.  If a student is having breakfast they go to the cafeteria to pick up the food and then take it to their classrooms to eat.
Dismissal: This is an extremely busy time of day.  Please communicate to the teacher or office in person or in writing well in advance of dismissal time if your child will be going home in an alternative way, i.e. instead of taking the bus home they will be picked up or have permission to walk to their destination, etc.

Traffic & Safety: Please help keep our students safe by following our Traffic & Safety procedures during pick-up and drop-off times. Remember that the traffic circle is only to be used for kindergarten through 2nd grades. Please review alternate safe drop-off locations for older students as well as additional arrival and dismissal procedures on the Burroughs website. Additionally, if you are using the Lynnhurst Park parking lot, please use this for drop off purposes only, not to park and walk you children to school.  Lynnhurst needs the parking spaces.
Family Calendar Handbook: Handbooks will be sent home with students in mid-September.  Until then, please refer to the Burroughs website for dates and times of school events.
School Spirit Fridays: Celebrate your Burroughs Spirit every Friday.  Encourage your children to wear our Burroughs Colors (navy and yellow) or any 'Burroughs Wear' they have. Purchase Spirit Wear or pick up a complimentary Burroughs Bobcats yard sign in the atrium during Curriculum Nights later this month. Stay tuned for additional Spirit Wear purchasing opportunities!
Fall Assessments
On Tuesday, September 10, we will begin administering FAST assessments in both reading and math for grades 1-5. Teachers use this information as one baseline data point to inform their instruction and design classroom experiences that meet the learning needs of all students.  As a school we use the data we gain from screener assessments such as the FAST to look at academic growth and to help us make programmatic decisions that are in the best interest of our students. Teachers will be sharing individual results of these assessments with families at Fall Conferences in mid-October. For more information on the FAST assessments, click here.

Calling All Volunteers: Many of the amazing things we do here at Burroughs are made possible by our dedicated volunteers.  Volunteering at school is a great way to get involved and connect with others.  Whether you have an hour a month, an hour a week, or more, we have lots of interesting and fun volunteer opportunities in our classrooms and school wide.  If you are interested in volunteering please contact the Burroughs main office or Erin Albu, PTA Volunteer Coordinator.
