American Indian Awareness & Family Involvement Week (Nov. 18 - Nov. 26): Families are welcome to join their students throughout the week to participate in classroom learning and activities related to American Indian History and Culture.  Throughout the week, students will be sharing information related to American Indian History and Culture each day during morning announcements. On November 25 and 26 a representative from the MPS Department of Indian Education will be at Burroughs speaking with our 2nd-5th graders.  Families are welcome to attend, please check with your child's classroom teacher for the time of the presentation.
Winter Weather Attire: Students are provided a 30 minute recess or activity period daily. Most days, students are sent outside. If the wind-chill temperature is below zero, or if the weather is inclement (rain/lightning), students may remain indoors for this recess. Please dress your child appropriately to be outdoors everyday (hat, gloves, coat, snow pants, etc.).
When Should my Child Stay Home?: As the cold and flu season approaches, you may be asking 'When should my child stay home?' The following are general guidelines to help with this decision.

Keep your child home if:
  • They have had a fever of 100 degrees or higher in the past 24 hours
  • They have vomited 2 or more times in the past 24 hours
  • They have diarrhea, an increased number of stools compared to normal or has stools that are loose, and they need to use the bathroom frequently
  • They have a rash for which the cause is unknown.  Check with your doctor before sending to school.
  • They have an illness (severe wheeze, severe cough, etc.) that prevents them from participating in school activities
  • Please call the attendance line at 612-668-3288 if your child will be absent or if you have any questions about whether to send your child to school
School Start Time: A reminder that school starts at 9:10 am. Students who are dropped off, walk, or bike to school can arrive as early at 8:55 am. For the safety of our students, unless they are enrolled in the Minneapolis Kids program, please do not drop them off at school until 8:55 am. Burroughs staff is typically in meetings from 8:00-8:55 am, therefore we do not have the capacity to supervise children during that time. Students who arrive after 9:10 a.m. will have to sign in at the office and be considered tardy.

Traffic Circle Rules: It is vital to the safety of our students that ALL families adhere to the rules of the traffic circle. The drop off circle at the main entrance is for children in Grades K-2 only. Please review alternate safe drop-off locations for students in Grades 3-5, as well as additional arrival and dismissal procedures on the Burroughs website
Please remember these rules:
  • Pull up as close to the 'Drop Off' sign as possible
  • Students must be let out of the PASSENGER (RIGHT) side onto the curb, not into the middle of the street (left side)
  • Adults, please DO NOT get out of your car
  • Students MUST hop out quickly so vehicle can depart immediately
  • Left-hand turns are NOT allowed onto 50th Street during drop-off (8:30am-9:30am) or pick-up (3pm-4pm)
  • After 3:00 pm, DO NOT drive into or park in the Main Entrance Circle.  Buses pick up students from this area.
Additionally, if you are using the Lynnhurst Park parking lot, please use this for drop off purposes only, not to park and walk your children to school.  Lynnhurst needs the parking spaces for Parks & Rec purposes.
This is an extremely busy time of day.  Please communicate to the teacher or office in person or in writing well in advance of dismissal time if your child will be going home in an alternative way, i.e. instead of taking the bus home they will be picked up or have permission to walk to their destination, etc.

Student Lunch Accounts: No child will ever be denied a lunch in MPS. However, if they are purchasing any item ala carte, such as milk, a second entree, or dessert, they have to have money in their lunch account or pay with cash. Please check your child's account by going to schoolcafe.com to manage balances, apply for educational benefits, and see menus and nutritional information.
