Note from the Principal
Monday, March 30, 2020 10:55 PM

Dear Families,

Despite the change in Spring Break plans for many, I hope you are able to find some joy and relaxation this week.  Last week was another whirlwind as staff prepared for the official launch of distance learning that will take place on Monday, April 6.  I know many of you and your children have already been practicing for this and although things will likely be a little bumpy the first week, I am confident that our community will make the best of the situation.

Teachers are officially on spring break themselves this week and so you may not hear too much from them until April 6.  On April 6, or before, you can expect to receive information about how students will engage in distance learning.  Our goal is that students are able to continue their learning in a way that is equitable, engaging, and flexible.  We understand that negotiating time and technology access with multiple people working and learning from home may be a challenge in the upcoming weeks.  Our teachers understand these unique circumstances and have plans for accommodations as needed.

The Burroughs staff and I are sad that we will not be reuniting at Burroughs on April 6 and we look forward to the day when we are able reconnect in person.  Until then, our teachers look forward to connecting virtually and I hope to see many of you virtually as well.  Thank you again for all the support and encouragement you have provided our teachers and one another!  I wish you all good health in the days and weeks ahead!

Be well,

Ana Bartl

Important School Announcements

Distance Learning begins on Monday, April 6

Distance learning provides access to learning opportunities for students outside of the regular school day/schedule.  MPS has a variety of elementary distance learning resources. The school and district will be providing distance learning opportunities that are not dependent on technology.  Information about these non-tech distance learning resources and how to access them will be shared this week.

Third Quarter Extended to April 16

MPS has extended the end of the third quarter from March 26 to April 16, adding eight days of instruction before grades are recorded on April 17 (which is a non-student day). This will give teachers additional time to provide instruction that has been disrupted due to school closures. The fourth quarter will begin on Mon., April 20.

Digital Citizenship and Cyber Safety

This transition to online learning is a great opportunity to remind ourselves and our children of the importance of digital citizenship and cyber safety.  As parents and caregivers, it is important that we pay attention to how our children are interacting as the engage with various online platforms, learning activities and assignments.  The internet is an amazing tool and it has its drawbacks.

Please remind children that respect, responsibility, and safety are expectations online just as in person and take care in monitoring student posts.  Here are some resources to support students and families.  There are a variety of videos about peer pressure, online safety, cyberbullying, information privacy, and digital etiquette.  To access these videos, enter the username: MPLS and password: school1.

Food for Children During Closure

Starting Monday, March 30 MPS will operate nearly 50 food distribution sites offering WEEKLY food pick up. Each day, up to 10 different sites across the city will offer food pick-up from 10am - 2pm, Monday-Friday.

Each food box contains 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches for a total of 10 meals. Families are welcome to take ONE (1) box per child, per week. Food is FREE and available to any child 18 years or younger. Look for the yellow school bus at all MPS food pickup sites! Make sure your household has adequate refrigeration to store food.

Supplemental groceries are available for families in partnership with The Sheridan Story.

Please note: Friday, April 3, will be the last day for daily food pick up.

Coronavirus Disease 2019

Learn about how all Minneapolis Public Schools are addressing this illness. As a school, we are required to comply with the guidelines set forth by district health services, the Minnesota Department of Health, and the CDC. Minneapolis Public Schools are closed Tuesday, March 17 through Sunday, April 5 and will resume with distance learning on Monday, April 6.

Seesaw - Seesaw is an online platform that many of our teachers are using for distance learning.  It is a student-driven digital portfolio that allows students to communicate with the teacher, share their work, engage in learning activities and reflect on learning. Seesaw also allows families to see the learning that is happening and communicate with teachers.
