Independent Reading - Independent Reading is an important component of a Balanced Literacy approach and a key element in supporting students to become lifelong readers.   During the literacy block students should have the opportunity to read independently every day.  In this time, students have choice in what they are reading, apply the skills they are learning through whole-group and small group lessons, develop stamina as readers, and develop habits and attitudes that support them in becoming proficient readers.  Independent reading is most beneficial for students when they have access to classrooms that have rich, well-organized book collections, when they are supported by their teacher in making good book choices, and when students have the opportunity to share their thinking through discussion, writing and conferencing.
