PhonicsPhonics is one of the five pillars of literacy, and in MPS it is an important component of our approach to reading instruction.  Phonics instruction teaches children the relationship between the letters of written language and the individual sounds of spoken language.  The goal of phonics instruction is to help children understand that there are systematic and predictable relationships between written letters and spoken sounds (Key Components of Reading Instruction - Minneapolis Elementary Literacy Framework).  For more on phonics instruction and other components of reading instruction please see this link.
