Number Talks: Number talks were developed for classroom teachers to engage students in "mental math" by talking through mathematical problems. A number talk is a short, ongoing daily routine that provides students with meaningful ongoing practice with computation. It is a powerful tool for helping students develop number sense and computational fluency because the expectation is that they will use number relationships and the structures of numbers to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Number talks range from 5 to 15 minutes and can be embedded into the daily math lesson or done as a standalone during morning meeting or other times during the school day.
