Note from the Principal

Dear Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful spring break! If you stayed in Minnesota, I hope you were able to find some joy in the return of the winter wonderland, and if you traveled, I hope your time was enjoyable and safe. I've heard from many of your children about all of the fun and adventures they had.
I know many of you are aware of a few budget decisions we had to make in March. I am happy to say that although Burroughs was impacted by the district's budget deficit, I believe that we were able to come away with a plan that will preserve strong core academic programming and student safety, as well as provide opportunities to enhance the educational experience that your children receive while at Burroughs. In this regard, I'd like to highlight the exciting opportunity to provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) as a specialist class next year. STEM will replace the part-time music specialist we had this year. We did have to make the difficult decision to reduce our budget in the areas of math intervention, reading intervention, and associate educator hours. We will no longer have licensed teachers to deliver math and reading interventions to our students. Instead, we will be looking for a teacher emeritus to coordinate and deliver these interventions. We will also continue to use our associate educators to support our students by providing academic interventions and to perform duties such as school patrol and lunch/recess support in order to ensure the safety of our students. These reductions will again require us to be creative about how we use our resources, and over the next few weeks, we will be working to finalize plans for next school year. I am confident that we will continue to provide our students with a well-rounded and academically rigorous education.
Next week, spring FAST and MCA testing begins. Please check out our website to see the April and May testing calendars. In addition to testing, the next few weeks are full of fun events, including our annual grade-level music concerts.
Please make sure to check out the announcements below. As always, feel free to reach out to me with any questions that may arise.
