What a success for Burroughs and the 11th annual Third Grade Pedal, Paddle, and Fish physical education field trip!  Over 125 Burroughs students took to the bike paths, waterways, and fishing holes for an adventurous event at Lake Harriet. Students ventured from the Burroughs gym, around the lake, and back for a three hour Physical Education field trip. The 3rd grade riders showed respect for other riders/bladers/joggers/walkers and used good bicycle safety skills and respectful bicycle etiquette. Many compliments were given to the students from other park users. Over 40 parent helpers and five classroom teachers contributed with supervision and support. Thank you teachers and parents!

While at our favorite fishing holes, students learned proper identification and use of fishing equipment, baiting hooks, removing fish from hooks, casting techniques, presentation of bait, and fish identification. We practiced catch and release techniques and used barbless hooks. Students fished from the fishing docks and caught 323 fish, breaking last year's school record of 291 fish. While canoeing and kayaking, students learned basic paddling stroke techniques, boating etiquette and water safety. Character building, cooperative skills, individual success, bicycle maintenance, trail and water etiquette, and bicycle and boating safety were all emphasized.

Fishing equipment, supplies, bait, canoes, kayaks, life guarding services, and transportation of that equipment was donated by Active Solutions. The Burroughs PTA purchased reserve teacher positions that allowed this event to take place. Thank you to Augsburg University Physical Education majors and parents for volunteering their time.
