September PTA Meeting
Mark your calendar for the first PTA meeting of the school year: Tuesday September 24th, 6:30-8 pm in the Cadotte Auditorium.  This is a great place to learn about many of the ways to get involved at our school and the different ways our PTA supports our students and teachers. All are welcome and encouraged to attend, especially new families. If you would like to become a voting member, please bring $10 cash or check to the meeting. Childcare will be provided for ages 3+.
Volunteer News
We have several key positions open for the 2019-2020 school year including: Bravo Music Enrichment Program, Classroom Volunteers, Art Adventures Class Volunteers, Read-A-Thon Co-chair, Media Center, Lunchroom, Fall for Burroughs Silent Auction, Families for Equity & Justice (FEJ), Fall Book Fair, and Lego League. Please email Erin Albu, Volunteer Coordinator, with interest or questions! Also, be sure to visit our signup page for a great overview of all volunteer positions and to sign up!  As always, these activities cannot happen without parent support and involvement. Thanks so much!
BRAVO: Volunteer Opportunity for Music Lovers
Share your love of music and get involved in your child's classroom by volunteering for the BRAVO Music Appreciation Program!
Attend two training sessions (one in fall, one in winter) and present six fun and engaging lessons throughout the year. All presentation materials are provided and no music experience is necessary. If you're considering volunteering but are short on time, partner up with another parent to split the lessons!
Visit the BRAVO page on the Burroughs website or email Alyssa Northrop to learn more or volunteer for the BRAVO program.

Art Adventure
With a new year comes a variety of involvement opportunities at school. One way to get involved immediately is with Art Adventure. For those who are unfamiliar, Art Adventure is sponsored by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (Mia). Art Adventure introduces students to works of art from a variety of cultures. The 2019-20 theme will be American Stories.
Volunteering includes: visiting Mia to learn about these 6 pieces of art and discussing them with our students in their art classes and using reproductions and other props (no teaching experience necessary).
The time commitment for grades 1-5 is:
  • Training: Will be in September and October; you choose one date/time that works for you.
  • Art Adventure Volunteer Gathering: This is not mandatory but offers parents an opportunity to go over ideas of class presentations and what has been done in the past.
  • November: Presenting 2 times in your child's art class.* (If there are enough volunteers in your child's classroom, you may choose to present only once.)
  • December: Tour Mia to see the art live.* (Optional for volunteers to attend, but recommended. It's fun to see the kids' excitement when they view and discuss the actual pieces!)
*Kindergarten families: You get Art Adventure too! The only differences are: You present the art in your child's classroom (not the art room), we limit presentation time to 30 minutes (busy little minds have trouble concentrating even that long!), you'll take a field trip to the Mia in January.
Questions? Contact the Burroughs Art Adventure Committee.

Lunchroom Volunteers Needed
If you are looking for a low commitment way to volunteer at Burroughs, consider helping in the lunchroom! We rely on lunchroom volunteers every day from 11 am until 1 pm to help the kids open containers, pass out napkins and forks, and help them learn how to sort their garbage. We especially need extra help the first few weeks of the school year.

Sign up here or email Stacy Thoma with questions!
